Heavily loaded Dumper with stone metal knocks down a child of a dalit slum widow while returning on cycle from school on Pune-Nagar Road High Way. While in search of the dumper horrifying & inhuman conditions of Stone Mining Workers Community led to establishment of SANTULAN ( S ocial A nimatio N T owards U nited L iberative A ctio N ) a voluntary social organization to work towards evolving a just, egalitarian and human Society.

Believing in 'Education for liberation' initiated pioneering educational programme named "Pashan Shala" (School among the stone quarries) exclusively for deprived children and childlabourers of marginalized Stone Quarry Workers Community. The first unit of Pashan Shala was launched on 2nd Oct. 1997 at workers colony in Wagholi Stone Quarry units of Pune district in Maharashtra .

Simultaneously, Santulan has under taken marginalized women, workers, adolescents & youths issues and their empowerment activities covering, stone quarry, rural and slum areas with the programmes of Community Health Service, Self help Groups, Legal Aid cum Counseling cell, Skills Training, Advocacy, Policy & various Trainings, Workshops, Rallies & Campaigns through the process of active participation and involvement of the target people towards evolving a society with self dignity, sustainability and self reliance.
